Quick Tips

Food
  • add a compost system to your backyard to make composting even easier
  • mount your compost collection bin under your working kitchen counter-top to make tossing food in easier- see photo to right for one example of how to do this (click for link)
  • weigh your compost each week prior to taking it to the curb or your own compost bin and record how much you collect over a month's time.  Work towards reducing this each week by preparing less food and making only what you need
  • pour all unused (but poured) water into a jug and use it to water plants, boil water for cooking or for pets
  • check where your food comes from when shopping- try to buy more local, meaning your food had the smallest carbon footprint in getting to you
  • one stop shop- pick your closest and least expensive grocery store you enjoy shopping at and do all your shopping there, instead of jumping from store to store to get the better deals.  Often you end up spending more on gas than you actually save
Transportation
  • as much as I'm not a fan of this idea, drive the speed limit which will save you gas and car emissions.  This ends up saving you money in gas and gas fumes for the environment
Outdoors
  • enough room for a garden?  Plant some vegetables and a fruit tree- the time outdoors and the food benefits are good for your health, plus it gets you away from your TV and computer screen (not while reading my blog though, of course!)
  • plant a young tree and make it a family affair, watch it grow with your family and take a photo of it (with or without family members) each year on it's "birthday"
